FAQs

Find answers to common questions about dog training and behavior modification to help you and your canine companion.

Canine rehabilitation focuses on helping dogs recover from moderate to severe behavior challenges, such as fear and aggression, through specialized training and exercises.

The duration of training varies based on the program and the individual dog’s needs, typically ranging from a few weeks to several months.

We utilize balanced training techniques to encourage desired behaviors and strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners.

Balanced Training is a method that uses both positive reinforcement and fair corrections to clearly communicate with your dog. It focuses on building trust, respect, and reliable behavior by rewarding good choices and gently addressing unwanted ones. Our Founder, Katie, always says, “Balanced Training is like gentle parenting…not permissive parenting!” Our methods are based on the core value that we always want to find the most loving way to communicate and get desired results.

We don’t offer 100% guarantees—no ethical trainer should. Every dog learns at their own pace, and lasting results depend on your commitment and consistency. What we can promise is a dedicated partnership: we carefully select our clients, work closely with you through the entire process, and continue to support you long after training ends. At CRT K9, you’re part of the family and part of our pack—and we never give up on our dogs or their people.

Board and trains aren’t a magic fix—but they’re an incredible way to jumpstart your dog’s progress. If you’re busy or overwhelmed, this option gives your dog a strong foundation while saving you the stress of doing all the heavy lifting up front. Unlike most programs, ours is a hybrid model that keeps you actively involved throughout the process. This ensures you and your dog build a stronger, healthier foundation together—so when the program ends, you’re not starting from scratch, you’re already a team.

Your dog will rest in a climate-controlled kennel for an average of 12-15 hours daily, aligning with their natural sleep needs—no more than 8 hours overnight and 2–8 hours during the day. Dogs are rotated 4–7 times daily for potty breaks, meals, meds, and water refills, with kennels cleaned each time. Each trainer manages just 1–6 dogs to ensure quality care, training, and a calm, low-stress environment. Daily activities include intensive one-on-one training, group sessions, place work, field trips, appropriate socialization, playtime, enrichment, and rest.

When used properly, e-collars are a powerful communication tool—not a source of fear. Our founder, Katie, calls it “the off-leash leash” because it allows you to guide and connect with your dog at a distance, just like a leash would up close. It’s all about clear, fair communication—not control. Likewise, if you ever hear a trainer say “crank up the level”, run!

Dogs are crepuscular animals, meaning they’re naturally most active at dawn and dusk—and need plenty of rest in between. In order to be healthy, mentally and physically, adult dogs require 12–15 hours of sleep per day, while puppies need 18–20 to support healthy development. Dogs with severe behavioral challenges often need even more rest, as their waking hours are spent processing fear, anxiety, and insecurity, which can be mentally and emotionally exhausting.

Many of our clients come to us after being failed by other trainers who use cookie-cutter methods and focus on obedience over true behavior change. At CRT K9, we take a personalized, holistic approach that addresses your dog’s mindset, builds confidence, and teaches better choices—not just temporary fixes. Our intensive programs include regular progress updates, to ensure that we are working with your dog effectively. The cornerstone of our program creation is this: if your dog isn’t progressing, it’s on US to figure out why, and find a better way of communicating with them so they can!

We have a strict no-refund policy. When you commit to training with us, your payment helps support our trainers and their families, upgrades to our programs and facilities, and most importantly, our connected nonprofit rescue, The Heroic Tail, that rescues and rehabilitates dogs as well as provides service dogs and therapy dogs to those in need, at an accessible rate. Your payment also reserves a spot we immediately take off the market for someone else. We don’t offer refunds for changes of mind, moving out of the area, or dissatisfaction with your dog’s progress—though we’ll always do our best to offer a fair alternative if needed. Refunds are only considered if we’re unable to deliver the service you paid for or a comparable option.
